SUMMARY:Community Book Read & Discussion Series: Waking Up White
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us for a new book club series for 2021 alternating between nonfiction and fiction titles. The first community read and virtual discussion will discuss Waking Up White by Debbie Irving. An eye-opener for many\, this book chronicles the author’s sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions with prompts on how readers can explore their own racialized ideas. \nYou need not commit to attending discussions of all books to participate in one.  However\, future book picks include The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich and How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. Audiobooks\, e-books\, and printed copies may be found at your local library\, Buttonwood Books and Toys in Cohasset\, at www.bookshop.org in support of local bookstores\, or from your preferred bookseller. \nRegistration is now closed for this event.

This time\, we will hear from Hingham Housing Authority (HHA) Chair Janine Suchecki and James Marathas\, the executive director of the Quincy Housing Authority. Bring your questions! \nZoom Meeting ID: 864 6848 1879 Passcode: 02043 \nA local housing authority (LHA) plays a critical role in providing affordable housing to low-income families and individuals in Massachusetts. The HHA\, our LHA\, is responsible for a broad range of issues\, including setting policy and by-laws\, advocating for low-income housing and the interests of the residents\, maintaining good community relations\, supporting tenant participation in the administration of public housing and ensuring adherence to DHCD (Massachusetts\, Department of Housing and Community Development) rules and regulations. Before working as the Executive Director of the Quincy Housing Authority (QHA)\, he worked for the Department of Housing and Community Development holding various positions including Director of Facilities which allowed him to travel throughout Massachusetts and work with hundreds of public housing authorities. In 2014\, he joined the QHA and uncovered and corrected several serious health and safety violations. in 2015\, he became the QHA Executive Director. In late 2019\, the Hingham Housing Authority invited the James and QHA to be the Executive Director for Hingham. Since taking over this role\, residents have received access to new programming\, health and safety corrections were made\, and HHA was awarded an $100\,000 placemaking grant. \nAbout Janine Suchecki\nJanine\, a lifelong Hingham resident\, was elected to the Hingham Housing Authority in 2019\, and currently serves as chair. In her short time on the HHA\, Janine has helped set over 20 new policies\, hired a new executive director with a management agreement\, and connected the residents at Thaxter Park and the Commander Anderson House with community services and student projects. SUMMARY:METCO and Students of Color Roundtable on the Academic Opportunity Gap
DESCRIPTION:We have partnered with Hingham METCO to host a roundtable discussion by Zoom to talk about the academic opportunity gap affecting our students of color in Hingham\, including our Hingham METCO students. Recent studies in our district have found some concerning disparities. We’d like to invite all interested parents of current or past Hingham METCO students\, parents of current or past Hingham students who identify as BiPOC\, and any interested METCO alumni to participate in this conversation. The Hingham Public Schools Equity Task Force is planning to participate\, along with representatives of the School Council at Hingham High School and the Hingham Public Schools Superintendent\, Dr. Paul Austin\, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jamie LaBillois and Hingham High School Principal Richard Swanson. We hope this will be a productive way to give METCO parents and others a more active voice in this ongoing conversation and get some new ideas and perspectives on how to meet this challenge. The discussion will be Monday\, November 30 at 7:30 pm- 8:30 pm. Please send an email to info@hinghamunity.org if you want to attend. This is not an event that will be open to the general public.

SUMMARY:Community Read of "Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria and Other Conversations about Race"
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Hingham Unity Council in partnership with the Hingham High School Anti-Defamation League in a community read and virtual discussion of Beverly Daniel Tatum’s landmark book “Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race.” This book explores the development of racial identity and provides a starting point to demystify conversations about race\, better understand the concept of racial identity\, and communicate across racial and ethnic divides.  Please note the book\, originally published in 1997\, was re-released in a new edition in 2017. Copies are available at Buttonwood Books & Toys in Cohasset (call first\, if our of stock can be available within 1-2 days). \nWe ask that you register in advance as we will break into smaller Zoom rooms for more effective conversations and we want to make sure we can provide adequate moderators for each small group.  This event is open to adults and interested high school age youth. \nRegister\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \nPlease let us know if you are an adult or a high school student (required): \nAdultHigh School Student\n \nQuestions or notes here: \n\n \n\n ×\n\n\n\nAbout the book:\nWalk into any racially mixed high school and you will see Black\, White\, and Latino youth clustered in their own groups. Is this self-segregation a problem to address or a coping strategy? Beverly Daniel Tatum\, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism\, argues that straight talk about our racial identities is essential if we are serious about enabling communication across racial and ethnic divides. These topics have only become more urgent as the national conversation about race is increasingly acrimonious. This fully revised edition is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics of race in America.

SUMMARY:Who Will Write Our History: Documentary and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This is a powerful documentary and we thought some of our members might be interested in viewing and participating in a virtual discussion about it. \nThe Hingham-Hull Religious Leaders Invite You To a Viewing and Discussion on Sunday\, November 8\, at 3 p.m.\nIn November 1940\, days after the Nazis sealed 450\,000 Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto\, a secret band of journalists\, scholars and community leaders decided to fight back. Led by historian Emanuel Ringelblum and known by the code name Oyneg Shabes\, this clandestine group vowed to defeat Nazi lies and propaganda not with guns or fists but with the ultimate weapon: the truth. (96 min.) Who Will Write Our History documents and reenacts the everyday events and personal experiences of the Jewish men and women who experienced firsthand the barbaric behaviors that led to their ultimate deaths. The Oyneg Shabes archive\, which numbers over 60\,000 items\, compiled artifacts from that time:  newspapers\, diaries\, photos\, and firsthand accounts.  And it is from this archive that Roberta Grossman created and directed this film. \nViewing Options:\n1. View the documentary in its entirety any time through Sunday\, November 8 at this link: http://gooddocs.net/…/palschuler%2540comcast.net/31168968\n2. For students\, view an edited version of the documentary any time through the Facing History and Ourselves website: https://www.facinghistory.org/…/who-will-write-our-history\n3. View the edited version of the documentary using On Demand (free through the Discovery Channel).\n4. Register in advance for our discussion on Sunday\, November 8\, at 3 p.m. Please email info@hinghamunity.org for the registration link.

SUMMARY:Race Talk\, presented by Scituate United for Action on Equality
DESCRIPTION:A group of panelists from different backgrounds will discuss their lives in Scituate and why they have chosen to raise their children in our town despite the lack of diversity. Our panel will share direct and indirect experiences with racism and prejudice within Scituate as well as fears they have for themselves and their children. You\, as audience members will have the opportunity to engage respectfully and ask appropriate questions. The topic of race is awkward and maybe a little bit scary for some people to talk about\, we get it. However\, Scituate United for Action on Equality believes we must be willing to teach and learn from one another and our experiences if we are ever to grow as an evolved community on the right side of history.\nZoom info in graphic:\n897 68405095\nPasscode: 952738
