SUMMARY:Community Book Discussion: The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of James McBride’s novel Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.  \nFrom Goodreads: \nThe new novel from the bestselling\, National Book Award-winning\, Oprah Book Club-picked\, Barack Obama favorite James McBride. \nIn 1972\, when workers in Pottstown\, Pennsylvania\, were digging the foundations for a new development\, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill\, the dilapidated neighbourhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. \nAs these characters’ stories overlap and deepen\, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town’s white establishment played in it\, McBride shows us that even in dark times\, it is love and community-heaven and earth-that sustain us. \nPlease register here to help us plan:\n\n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.

SUMMARY:Community Book Discussion of Disability Visibility
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a discussion of Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century. Register below to help us plan! \nFrom Goodreads: \nOne in five people in the United States lives with a disability. Some disabilities are visible\, others less apparent—but all are underrepresented in media and popular culture. Now\, just in time for the thirtieth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act\, activist Alice Wong brings together this urgent\, galvanizing collection of contemporary essays by disabled people. \nFrom Harriet McBryde Johnson’s account of her debate with Peter Singer over her own personhood to original pieces by authors like Keah Brown and Haben Girma; from blog posts\, manifestos\, and eulogies to Congressional testimonies\, and beyond: this anthology gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience\, highlighting the passions\, talents\, and everyday lives of this community. It invites readers to question their own understandings. It celebrates and documents disability culture in the now. It looks to the future and the past with hope and love. \nRegister here:\n\n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.

SUMMARY:Community Book Discussion: Amanda Ripley's High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped an How We Get Out
DESCRIPTION:Another area of concern for our community identified at our “Community Check In” last October was “political differences.” This excellent book provides stories and tools for ow we can recharacterize and rehumanize people we disagree with in order to achieve healthy and productive conflict versus what Ripley calls “high” conflict. From the publisher: \n“People do escape high conflict. Individuals—even entire communities—can short-circuit the feedback loops of outrage and blame\, if they want to. This is an “insightful and enthralling” (The New York Times Book Review) book—and a mind-opening new way to think about conflict that will transform how we move through the world.” \nRegister to Help Us Plan\n\n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.
