SUMMARY:Community Read of "Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria and Other Conversations about Race"
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Hingham Unity Council in partnership with the Hingham High School Anti-Defamation League in a community read and virtual discussion of Beverly Daniel Tatum’s landmark book “Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race.” This book explores the development of racial identity and provides a starting point to demystify conversations about race\, better understand the concept of racial identity\, and communicate across racial and ethnic divides.  Please note the book\, originally published in 1997\, was re-released in a new edition in 2017. Copies are available at Buttonwood Books & Toys in Cohasset (call first\, if our of stock can be available within 1-2 days). \nWe ask that you register in advance as we will break into smaller Zoom rooms for more effective conversations and we want to make sure we can provide adequate moderators for each small group.  This event is open to adults and interested high school age youth. \nRegister\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \nPlease let us know if you are an adult or a high school student (required): \nAdultHigh School Student\n \nQuestions or notes here: \n\n \n\n ×\n\n\n\nAbout the book:\nWalk into any racially mixed high school and you will see Black\, White\, and Latino youth clustered in their own groups. Is this self-segregation a problem to address or a coping strategy? Beverly Daniel Tatum\, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism\, argues that straight talk about our racial identities is essential if we are serious about enabling communication across racial and ethnic divides. These topics have only become more urgent as the national conversation about race is increasingly acrimonious. This fully revised edition is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics of race in America.

SUMMARY:Who Will Write Our History: Documentary and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This is a powerful documentary and we thought some of our members might be interested in viewing and participating in a virtual discussion about it. \nThe Hingham-Hull Religious Leaders Invite You To a Viewing and Discussion on Sunday\, November 8\, at 3 p.m.\nIn November 1940\, days after the Nazis sealed 450\,000 Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto\, a secret band of journalists\, scholars and community leaders decided to fight back. Led by historian Emanuel Ringelblum and known by the code name Oyneg Shabes\, this clandestine group vowed to defeat Nazi lies and propaganda not with guns or fists but with the ultimate weapon: the truth. (96 min.) Who Will Write Our History documents and reenacts the everyday events and personal experiences of the Jewish men and women who experienced firsthand the barbaric behaviors that led to their ultimate deaths. The Oyneg Shabes archive\, which numbers over 60\,000 items\, compiled artifacts from that time:  newspapers\, diaries\, photos\, and firsthand accounts.  And it is from this archive that Roberta Grossman created and directed this film. \nViewing Options:\n1. View the documentary in its entirety any time through Sunday\, November 8 at this link: http://gooddocs.net/…/palschuler%2540comcast.net/31168968\n2. For students\, view an edited version of the documentary any time through the Facing History and Ourselves website: https://www.facinghistory.org/…/who-will-write-our-history\n3. View the edited version of the documentary using On Demand (free through the Discovery Channel).\n4. Register in advance for our discussion on Sunday\, November 8\, at 3 p.m. Please email info@hinghamunity.org for the registration link.

SUMMARY:Race Talk\, presented by Scituate United for Action on Equality
DESCRIPTION:A group of panelists from different backgrounds will discuss their lives in Scituate and why they have chosen to raise their children in our town despite the lack of diversity. Our panel will share direct and indirect experiences with racism and prejudice within Scituate as well as fears they have for themselves and their children. You\, as audience members will have the opportunity to engage respectfully and ask appropriate questions. The topic of race is awkward and maybe a little bit scary for some people to talk about\, we get it. However\, Scituate United for Action on Equality believes we must be willing to teach and learn from one another and our experiences if we are ever to grow as an evolved community on the right side of history.\nZoom info in graphic:\n897 68405095\nPasscode: 952738

SUMMARY:Hate Has No Home In Hingham
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Sunday\, August 2\, from 11am-12pm (meet near the Gazebo)\, as we stand together to recognize that every person deserves to feel valued\, appreciated\, and most importantly\, safe from intimidation and fear in Hingham and our country. We have been disheartened by the discord over recent events here. We seek to unite rather than divide\, to find common ground that we can build on to move forward and demonstrate the values our community stands for. \nWe recognize the dignity of those who have chosen to serve and protect us and acknowledge different perspectives\, but we completely reject any divisive symbol that encourages hatred and evokes fear within our community\, whether intended or not. We believe that supporting people of color and supporting Hingham’s police\, firefighters and other first responders who serve our community are not mutually exclusive. \nThis year has tested the resilience and patience of our community and our nation. We know that not only can we weather these challenging times\, but we can emerge more united and more supportive of one another. This will require all of us to reflect\, listen and open our minds and hearts. Please join us in this step forward to build a more inclusive community. \nEveryone is encouraged to wear their town apparel and join us to show that there is no room for intolerance in Hingham and beyond. We welcome our friends from surrounding communities who wish to join us. \nWe are very sensitive to the ongoing health crisis. Participants are asked to wear masks and maintain social distancing.

SUMMARY:Community Read & Virtual Discussion of Stamped (Session 1 + Registration)
DESCRIPTION:Calling all high school and college students — and ADULTS (added due to popular demand)! Are you interested in community conversation on racism? Join us to read and discuss Ibram X. Kendi’s Stamped: Racism\, Antiracism\, and You\, a book that chronicles the history of racist ideas–and shares ways readers can identify and stamp out racist thoughts in their daily lives. \nOpen to ages 13+. Books will be loaned to participants in honor of Dr. Holly Carter & Dr. Caitlin Slodden\, leaders of Sacred Ground at St. John’s Episcopal Church. The discussion will be moderated by high school and college-aged leaders and is co-sponsored by the Hingham High School ACLU. We can also facilitate “family” reading groups based on interest (that is\, if your family wants to read the book together and discuss with one or two other families). \nAbout the Book\nStamped: Racism\, Antiracism\, and You\nBy Jason Reynolds & Ibram X. Kendi \nThe construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power\, to create dynamics that separate and silence. This remarkable reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s National Book Award-winning Stamped From the Beginning reveals the history of racist ideas in America\, and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now\, shows you why we feel how we feel\, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute\, they can also be discredited. \nProgram Details\nBook pick-up: July 10-13\nReading period: July 10-30\n1st Conversation: Thursday\, July 30 7-8 PM (in small groups via Zoom)\nFinal Conversation: Thursday\, August 6 (7-8 PM in small groups via Zoom; 8-8:30 PM everyone) \n\nStudent Planning Team\nPaige Shetty\, Hingham High School ’16\, Colorado College ’20\nBeth Laine\, Hingham High School ’20\nCatie McLane\, Nobles and Greenough School ’24\nAbby MacDonald\, Hingham High School ‘21\nCate MacDonald\, Hingham High School ‘21\nEmily Taylor\, Milton Academy ‘21\nJustin Hull\, Hingham High School ’17\, UConn ’21\nWill Sutton\, Hingham High School ’19\, Harvard University ’23
