SUMMARY:*Community event of interest*: Insights from a Title IX Expert: How to prepare your college and high school kids to protect themselves and their peers
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of recent issues in the news\, parents are wondering what they can do not only to educate\, but also to protect\, their kids as they begin to navigate issues around consent. Please join for a free and frank discussion about how to speak to your teens and young adults about these complicated situations.  \nWho this is for: Moms\, Dads (yes\, Dads!)\, Aunts and Uncles\, Older Siblings- anyone who knows a young person who could benefit from some guidance  \nThe speaker\, Hingham community member Susanna Murphy\, is a Title IX expert who conducts investigations and serves as an advisor for those involved in either side of the Title IX process.   \nI have spent countless hours discussing these issues\, allegations\, and encounters with young people and feel that I have a sense of effective ways to speak to kids about how to protect themselves and their peers from becoming entangled in these situations as a victim\, an accused\, or a “bystander.”    \nThese issues can affect students of every background\, regardless of gender\, sexual orientation\, or social circle\, making this an important conversation for every family. While this presentation will not address the deeper\, gravely concerning issues underlying these situations\, it aims to provide practical\, actionable tools to help students make informed choices\, look out for one another\, and reduce risk.  \n**What to know**– from the speaker: This discussion is not a sanitized\, Rated G\, formal presentation that speaks in a strictly professional tone. I will be speaking in the terminology that I hear young people using every day because I believe that is what resonates with them\, and part of my goal is to help desensitize you to feeling shy about using that language. Yes\, a swear word might be used where it has a purpose.  I may reference intimate body parts in their formal terminology or in the slang terms that young adults tend to use. This discussion goes far beyond what schools and on-line programming are willing to offer\, because I believe that what is out there is not working.  If any these factors are objectionable to you\, there are numerous alternate programs for you to attend\, and I encourage you to seek out a forum that better suits your comfort level.
